History of Mobilink Jazz
Originally named Mobilink, the company was established in 1994 through a collaboration between Saif Group and Motorola Inc. In February 2001, Egypt-based Orascom Investment Holding acquired Motorola’s shares in Jazz, making it the majority shareholder with 69% control. Later, in June 2007, Orascom went on to purchase the remaining shares under Saif Group’s ownership, achieving full ownership of Jazz.
In 2010, Russian operator VEON agreed to a $6.5 billion deal to acquire most of Orascom’s telecom assets, including Jazz, making it the world’s fifth-largest mobile network operator by subscriber base. In November 2015, VEON announced the complete acquisition of Pakistan’s Warid Telecom, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Group.
The acquisition, finalized in July 2016, marked the first-ever local telecom company merger, resulting in a combined subscriber base of 50 million.
Following the merger of Mobilink and Warid Pakistan, Mobilink underwent an official rebranding to Jazz in 2017. As of October 2023, Jazz boasts 70 million subscribers in Pakistan, with 43 million being 4G subscribers, holding the highest market share among all mobile network operators at 37%.
VEON is set to acquire the remaining 15% shares in Jazz from the Abu Dhabi Group, ensuring 100% ownership. In March 2021, VEON successfully completed the acquisition of the 15% shares held by Abu Dhabi Group for US$273 million.
